Norman Woolman Merriman 1889 - 1952

Norman Woolman Merriman was born at 12 Elaine Grove, Kentish Town, London in 1889, he was the third and last child of John William Merriman and Mary Elizabeth Merriman (nee Woolman)

On 5th April 1891 the Census was held. Norman Woolman Merriman was living at 12 Elaine Grove, Kentish Town, London with his parents John William Merriman and Mary Elizabeth Woolman (nee Merriman), his siblings Bertie John Merriman and Ethel Mary Merriman, his aunt Charlotte Woolman and a boarder, Fredreick Parmiter, a fellow workman of his father.

On 31st March 1901 the Census was held. Norman Woolman Merriman was living at 31 Courthope Road, Kentish Town, London with his parents John William Merriman and Mary Elizabeth Merriman (nee Woolman) and his siblings Bertie John Merriman and Ethel Mary Merriman.

In 1952 Norman Woolman Merriman died.

Ethel Mary Merriman 27th September 1886 - 1970



Ethel Mary Merriman was born on 27th September 1886 at 12 Elaine Grove,Kentish Town, London. She was the second child of John William Merriman and Mary Elizabeth Merriman (nee Woolman).

On 5th April 1891 the Census was held. Ethel Mary Merriman was living at 12 Elaine Grove, Kentish Town, London with her parents John William Merriman and Mary Elizabeth Merriman (nee Woolman), her brother's Bertie John Merriman and Norman William Merriman, her aunt Charlotte Woolman and a borader Frederick Parmiter, a fellow workman of her father's.

On 31st March 1901 the Census was held. Ethel Mary Merriman was living at 31 Courthope Road, Kentish Town, London, with her parents John William Merriman and Mary Elizabeth Merriman (nee Woolman) and her brother's Bertie John Merriman and Norman William Merriman.

On 2nd April 1911 the Census was held. Ethel Mary Merriman was living at 95 Olive Road, Willesden, London, with her father John William Merriman and a boarder, Sophie Miller. Ethel at this time was working as a Housekeeper.

On 3rd July 1915 Ethel Mary Merriman married Francis Henry Judge at St. Silas Church, Penton Street, Islington, London.

The marriage entry read;

Married in the Church of St Silas according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by - or after Banns by me,

This Marriage was solemnized between us, {F H Judge/ E M Merriman} in the Presence of us, {J W Merriman/R M Judge}

On 23rd May 1916 at 95 Olive Road, Cricklewood, London, Ethel Mary Judge (nee Merriman) gave birth to her only child, Peter Francis Judge.

In the mid 1930's Peter Francis Judge met and married Lilian Biss and started his own family, this meant that 95 Olive Road began to become to small, so the family bought 32 Rydal Gardens, Wembley, Middlesex.

On 15th May 1968, Ethel Mary Judge (nee Merriman) made her Will. It reads;

This is the last Will of me ETHEL MARY JUDGE of No. 32 Rydal Gardens Wembley Middlesex


1. I REVOKE all Wills and testamentary dispositions heretofore made by me


2. I APPOINT HILDA EDITH CHESHIRE and MARIAN ELSIE SHEEN both of 100 Windermere Avenue Wembley aforesaid (hereinafter called "my Trustees") to be the EXECUTORS and TRUSTEES of this my Will and I GIVE free of duty to each of them the sum of TEN POUNDS for their trouble in so acting


3.I GIVE the following specific legacies all free of duty namely:-


A. TO my Grand-daughter ARLINE ROSEMARY SIMON my engagement ring all my costume jewellery my silver dressing table set including two cut glass silver mounted scent bottles and my Eidelweiss vase


B. TO my Grand-daughter-in-law HEDWIG wife of my Grandson-Francis Michael Judge my gold wrist watch

F. TO my Grandson FRANCIS MICHAEL JUDGE my silver-mounted green decanter my silver teapot and my silver goblets


G. TO the said HILDA EDITH CHESHIRE my old oak blanket-chest


4. I GIVE all the rest and residue of my property and effects whatsoever and wheresoever and whether real or personal (subject to the payment thereout of my furneral and testamentary expenses and my debts (if any) and any legacies given by any Codicil hereto and the duty on any legacies or gifts hereby or by any Codicil hereto made free of duty) to my Grandson the said FRANCIS MICHEAL JUDGE that if he shall have died in my lifetime leaving issue living at my death who attain the age of twenty one years then such issue shall take my residuary estate and if more than one in equal shares and I DECLARE that my gift of my residuary estate to the said Francis Michael Judge is in consideration of his having undertaken to look after and provide for me in my later years

In 1970 Ethel Mary Judge (nee Merriman) died in Hampstead, London.

Bertie John Merriman 16th July 1884 - 29th October 1902

Bertie John Merriman was born on 16th July 1884 at 12 Elaine Grove, Kentish Town, Middlesex. He was the eldest child of John William Merriman and Mary Elizabeth Merriman (nee Woolman).

On 12th October 1884 Bertie John Merriman was baptised at the Parish Church of Kentish Town, Middlesex.

On 5th April 1891 the Census was held. Bertie John Merriman was living at 12 Elaine Grove, Kentish Town, London, with his parents John William Merriman and Mary Elizabeth Merriman (nee Woolman), his siblings Ethel Mary Merriman and Norman William Merriman, his aunt Charlotte Woolman and boarder Frederick Parmiter, a fellow worker of his John William Merriman, on the railway's.

On 23rd May 1899 Bertie John Merriman was employed as a Railway Clerk, with Midland Railway Company. He was based at Somers Town Station on an annual wage of £40, which in today's money is £2,700.

On 31st March 1901 the Census was held. Bertie John Merriman was living at 31 Courthope Road, Camden, London, with his parents John William Merriman and Mary Elizabeth Merriman (nee Woolman) and his siblings Ethel Mary Merriman and Norman Merriman. Bertie was working with his father at Midland Railway as a Railway Clerk.

On 1st March 1902 Bertie John Merriman was paid £10, £600 in today's money, this would be his last payment from Midland Railway because on 29th October 1902 Bertie died.


Harry Merriman 1868 - 1906

Harry Merriman was born in Thringstone, Leicestershire in 1868, he was the fifth and last child of Mary Ann Merriman and maybe William Ward.

On 2nd April 1871 the Census was held. Harry Merriman was living in Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire, with his Grandmother Hannah Merriman (nee Bramley), his Step-Father Edward Beer, his Mother Mary Ann Beer (nee Merriman) and his brother's John William Merriman, Everard Merriman, William B. Merriman, William E. Merriman and Norman Merriman.

On 3rd April 1881 the Census was held. Harry Merriman was still living in Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire, with his Step-Father Edward Beer, his mother Mary Ann Beer (nee Merriman) and his brother's William Merriman, Norman Merriman, Arthur Beer and Charles H Beer.

On 5th April 1891 the Census was held. Harry Merriman was still living in Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire, with his Step-Father Edward Beer, his mother Mary Ann Beer (nee Merriman) and his brother Arthur Beer. Harry worked as Coal Miner.

In 1891 Harry Merriman married Clara Jane Spray. The would go on to have three children; Charles Merriman born 1893, John Merriman born 1895 and Norman Merriman born 1898.

On 31st March 1901 the Census was held. Harry Merriman was living in Main Street, Thringstone, Leicestershire, with his wife Clara Jane Merriman (nee Spray) and their children Charles Merriman, John Merriman and Norman Merriman. Harry was still working as a Coal Miner.

On 6th May 1901, Clara Jane Merriman (nee Spray) died.

On 2nd September 1906 Harry Merriman died.

Norman Merriman 1864 - 1947

Norman Merriman was born in Thringstone, Leicestershire, in 1864, he was the fourth child of Mary Ann Merriman and maybe William Ward.

On 2nd April 1871 the Census was held. Norman Merriman was living in Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire, with his Grandmother Hannah Merriman (nee Bramley), his Step-Father Edward Beer, his mother Mary Ann Beer (nee Merriman) and his brother's John William Merriman, Everard Merriman, William B. Merriman, William E. Merriman and Henry George Merrirman.

On 3rd April 1881 the Census was held. Norman Merriman was still living in Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire, with his Step-Father Edward Beer, his Mother Mary Ann Beer (nee Merriman) and his brother's William Merriman, Harry Merriman, Arthur Beer and Charles H. Beer. Norman was working as a Coal Miner.

In 1881 Norman Merriman married Emily Hickman in Pilsley, Derbyshire. They would go on to have seven children. Hetty Merriman born 1890, Norman Merriman born 1893, Alice Merriman born 1898, Annie Merriman born 1899, Thomas Merriman born 1901, Alfred Ernest Merriman born 1905 and Nelie Merriman born 1910.

On 5th April 1891 the Census was held. Norman Merriman was living in Church Street, Pilsley, Derbyshire, with his wife Emily Merriman (nee Hickman), his daughter Hetty Merriman and his brother-in-law John Hickman. Living next door to him were other members of the Hickman family. Norman was still working as a Coal Miner, along with members of the Hickman family.

On 31st March 1901 the Census was held. Norman Merrima was living in Station Road, Pilsley, Derbyshire, with his wife Emily Merriman (nee Hickman) and their children; Hettie Merriman, Norman Merriman, Alice Merriman and Annie Merriman. Norman was still a Coal Miner.

On 2nd April 1911 the Census was held. Norman Merriman was living at 32 Wesley Street, Moorthorpe, South Elmsall, Yorkshire, with his wife Emily Merriman (nee Hickman) and their children; Norman Merriman, Alice Merriman, Annie Merriman, Thomas Merriman, Alfred Ernest Merriman and Nellie Merriman.

In 1947 Norman Merriman died in Hemsworth, Yorkshire.

William Merriman 1862 - 1884

William Merriman was born in Thringstone, Leicestershire in 1862. He was the third child of Mary Ann Merriman and maybe William Ward.

On 2nd April 1871 the Census was held. William Merriman was living in Thringstone, Leicestershire, with his Grandmother Hannah Merriman (nee Bramley), his Step-Father Edward Beer, his Mother Mary Ann Beer (nee Merriman) and his brother's John William Merriman, William E. Merriman, Norman Merriman and Henry Merriman.

On 3rd April 1881 the Census was held. William Merriman was living in Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire, with his Step-Father Edward Beer, his Mother Mary Ann Beer (nee Merriman) and his brother's Norman Merriman, Henry Merriman, Arthur Edward Beer and Charles Henry Beer. William Merriman was a Bootmaker Apprentice.

In 1884 William Merriman died.

Everard Griffin Merriman 1861 - 1940

Everard Griffin Merriman was born in Thringstone, Leicestershire in Janurary 1861, the second child of Mary Ann Merriman and possibly William Ward.

On 7th April 1861 the Census was held. Everard Griffin Merriman was living at The Bull's Head Inn, Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire. He was living with his Grandmother Hannah Merriman (nee Bramley), his mother Mary Ann Merriman, his aunt's Hannah Merriman, Jane Merriman and Hester Merriman and his brother John William Merriman.

On 2nd April 1871 the Census was held. Everard Griffin Merriman was living in Thringstone, Lieicestershire, with his Grandmother Hannah Merriman (nee Bramley), his Step-Father Edward Beer, his Mother Mary Ann Beer (nee Merriman), his brother's John William Merriman, Wiliam B. Merriman, William E. Merriman, Norman Merriman and Henry Merriman.

On 3rd April 1881 the Census was held. Everard Griffin Merriman was living in Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire. He was living with Grandmother Hannah Merriman, and his brotherWilliam Merriman. Living either side of them were the Gough families. Everard was woking as a Bricklayer Apprentice.

In 1882 Everard Griffin Merriman married Kate Elizabeth Orridge in Thringstone, Leicestershire. They would go on to have two children; Henry Everard Merriman born 1888 and Arthur Merriman born 1889.

On 5th April 1891 the Census was held. Everard Griffin Merriman was living in Thringstone, Leicestershire. He was living with his Wife Kate Merriman (nee Orridge) and his two children, Henry Everard Merriman and Arthur Merriman. He was now working as a Bricklayer.

In 1901 his wife Kate Elizabeth Merriman (nee Orridge) died.

On 7th June 1940 Everard Griffin Merriman of Victoria Cottage, Main Street, Thringstone, Leicestershire, died at Bosworth Park Infirmary, Market Bosworth, Leicestershire. In his will he left to his son's Arthur Merriman, a Painter and Henry Everard Merriman, a Coal Miner £432 19s 6d, which in todays money is £13,000. So they got £6,500 each.
