John William Waterfield Merriman was born on 17th April 1860 in Thringstone, Leicestershire. He was the eldest child of Mary Ann Merriman and John Waterfield.
On 7th April 1861 the Census was held. John William Waterfield Merriman was living at The Bull's Head Inn, Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire. He was living with his Grandmother Hannah Merriman (nee Bramley), his mother Mary Ann Merriman, his aunt's Hannah Merriman, Jane Merriman and Hester Merriman and his brother Edward George Merriman.
On 2nd April 1871 the Census was held. John William Merriman was living in Loughborough Road, Thringstone, Leicestershire. He was living with his Grandmother Hannah Merriman (nee Bramley), his step-father Edward Beer, his mother Mary Ann Beer (nee Merriman), his brother's Edward Merriman, William E. Merriman, Norman Merriman, Henry Merriman and his cousin William B. Merriman.
On 15th May 1873 John William Merriman joined Midland Railway as a Railway Clerk, based at Woodville Train Station on an annual wage of £207 pa. Which by today's money would be £10,000 pa. His examination number was 5981.
On 3rd April 1881 the Census was held. John William Merriman was living as a Boarder at 9 Dartmouth Park Hill, Islington, London, he shared the house with it's owner George Kingcombe a Painter, his wife Mary Kingcombe and their children Annie Kingcombe, a Governess, George Kingcombe a Railway Clerk, Eliza Kingcombe, a Washer, Edward Kingcombe, a Joiner and Walter Kingcombe, another Railway Clerk and a fellow Boarder, Edward King, a Commercial Clerk.
On 16th July 1883, John William Merriman married Mary Elizabeth Woolman. The marriage entry reads;

This Marriage was solemnized between us, {John William Merriman/Mary Elizabeth Woolman} in the Presence of us, {Jane Woolman/Charlotte Woolman}
They would go on to have three children; Bertie Merriman born 1885, Ethel Mary Merriman born 1886 and Norman Merriman born 1889.
On 18th September 1890 John William Merriman became a Railway Collector based at Kentish Town Train Station on a pay of £105 pa, which in today's money is £6,500 pa.
On 5th April 1891 the Census was held. John William Merriman was living at 12 Elaine Grove, Camden, London, working as a Railway Collector. He was living with his wife Mary Elizabeth Merriman (neeWoolman), their children; Bertie John Merriman, Ethel Mary Merriman and Norman William Merriman, his sister-in-law Charlotte Woolman and a Boarder and fellow railway worker Frederick Parmiter.
On 1st December 1891 John William Merriman had his wages reduced to £45pa, which in today's money is £2,500 pa.
On 1st August 1896 John William Merriman had his wages increased to £125 pa, which in today's money is £7,750 pa.
On 1st August 1898 John William Merriman had his wages increased to £135 pa, which in today's money is £8,500 pa.
On 31st March 1901 John William Merriman was living at 31 Courthope Road, Camden, London, working as a Railway Canvasser. A Railway Canvasser were employed to act as a salesman for the railway companies, offering and explaining the facilities available to companies and trying to secure their custom. John William Merriman was living with his wife Mary Elizabeth Merriman (nee Woolman) and their children; Bertie Merriman, Ethel Merriman and Norman Merriman.
On 2nd April 1911 John William Merriman was living at 95 Olive Road, Willesden, London, working as a Railway Agent. A Railway Agent undertook work on behalf of the railway companies, for instance in arranging transport of goods and materials by railway or delivery of parcels. John William Merriman was living with his daughter Ethel Mary Merriman and a boarder, Sophie Miller.
In 1925 John William Merriman died.
In John William Merriman's Will, dated 15th December 1925, he left £1,202 7s. 10d. to his daughter Ethel Mary Judge (wife of Francis Henry Judge). That would amount to £36,500 in today's money.
